About the museum

The Museu do Sargaço, also called the Núcleo Museológico das Paisagens do Sargaço do Litoral de Esposende (Museum Unit of the Seaweed Landscapes of the Esposende Coast), is one of the units of the Museu Municipal de Esposende. Its mission is to conserve, disseminate and promote the culture of seaweed gathering across the municipality, especially in the parish of Apúlia, where this activity was most intense and deeply rooted and is today one of the community's major cultural symbols.

For centuries the seaweed, gathered from the shore and dried in the sun, served as organic fertiliser for the region's farmland. The museum tells this story in the main room on the ground floor, with costumes, boats, work tools, types of buildings linked to the activity and the masseira fields, as well as videos and historical photographs.

On the upper floor, the exhibition presents the environmental value of the municipal territories where seaweed gathering took place: fauna and flora, geological characteristics and land-planning instruments. The museum also explores the current potential of these algae, which, besides agricultural use, can be used in hygiene, cosmetic and food products.
