About the museum
The Centro de Memória (Memory Centre) occupies the Solar de São Sebastião (São Sebastião manor house), a 17th-century house bearing a coat of arms, which takes its name from a chapel that once stood in front of the main façade and was moved to the municipal cemetery in 1853. The coat of arms dates from the mid-18th century and represents the Pereira, Rangel, Coutinho and Carneiro families. Between 1979 and 2001 the building housed the Municipal Library. The Câmara acquired it in 2000 and carried out a thorough rehabilitation, with the construction of two new wings that doubled the original area. The Centro de Memória opened on 14 December 2008, and the project received the IRHU Rehabilitation Prize and the Alexandre Herculano National Architecture Prize.
The centre brings together the Arquivo Municipal (Municipal Archive), the Gabinete de Arqueologia (Archaeology Office), the Galeria Julio / Centro de Estudos Julio e Saúl Dias (Julio / Julio and Saúl Dias Study Centre gallery) and the central unit of the Museu de Vila do Conde, as well as temporary contemporary art exhibitions, a multipurpose room, an education service, a café, a shop and about 7000 m² of garden.
The permanent exhibition of the central unit, “Vila do Conde: Tempo e Território”, takes visitors through the history of the municipality across 19 rooms, from around 200 thousand years ago to the present day: the origins, the people and the environments that built the identity of Vila do Conde.

Rates per museum unit; the central unit of the Museu de Vila do Conde is in the Centro de Memória. Free admission also for holders of the Cartão Jovem Municipal (municipal youth card), students with a University of Porto card and other groups listed in the price list. Schools in the municipality enter free with a booking.
