Opening hoursAdmission €8 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum presents the decorative arts collection of the businessman and collector António de Medeiros e Almeida (1895–1986) in the house where he lived. The couple bought a mansion built in 1896 in 1943 and made it their residence in 1946. After the Second World War, the collector bought at the main auction houses and antique dealers in Europe.

To ensure the conservation of the collection, in 1972 they set up the Fundação Medeiros e Almeida, with the aim of giving the country a house museum. The architect Alberto Cruz designed an extension over the garden and the adaptation of the house into a museum; the couple moved to a neighbouring villa. The museum opened to the public in June 2001.

The route has two areas: the wing inhabited by the owners, kept as it was, and the wing built over the garden, with recreated settings. In the 27 rooms some 2,000 works are displayed, from the 2nd century BC to the 20th century, with a predominance of French taste. The collections of clocks, Chinese ceramics, silverware and fans stand out.
