About the museum

The Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema is the Portuguese public institution dedicated to preserving and disseminating cinematographic heritage. In Lisbon, on Rua Barata Salgueiro, it has cinema screening rooms with a regular programme, a library and photographic archive, a bookshop and a restaurant, as well as an education service, the Cinemateca Júnior, which organises films, workshops and guided tours for younger visitors.

The permanent pre-cinema exhibition is housed in the ANIM – National Archive of Moving Images, the Cinemateca's conservation centre, in Bucelas. It is a didactic and playful experience, organised according to historical, thematic and educational principles, in four areas: the magic lantern, optical toys, the history of photography and the beginnings of cinema.

The exhibition brings together objects and apparatus from the Cinemateca's collection, many of them original period pieces from the 18th to the 20th century, and replicas that visitors can handle. It shows the ancestors of projection and photography and the illusion of moving images. It is open to visitors on Thursdays only, exclusively for schools and groups, and includes a guided tour.
