About the museum
The Fundação Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva was established in 1990. After the death of Arpad Szenes in 1985, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva began to think of a study centre on the couple's work, an idea that evolved into a museum in Lisbon. It was the artist herself who wanted Arpad Szenes's name to precede hers and for the institution to be devoted to his work as well.
The museum occupies the former Real Fábrica de Tecidos de Seda, next to the Jardim das Amoreiras: a spacious, plain Pombaline house linked to an early 20th-century factory structure, chosen by the painter. The building belongs to the Lisbon municipal council. The museum opened in 1994 and reopened in November 2024, after works that included new skylights.
The collection brings together paintings and drawings by the two artists from a wide period of their production, including works bequeathed by Vieira da Silva to the State, documents from the couple's personal archive and a group of prints. The foundation maintains a documentation and research centre and the Casa-Atelier, where the artists lived and worked.
