About the museum
The Casa-Museu Amália Rodrigues occupies an 18th-century building on Rua de São Bento in Lisbon, where the fado singer lived for more than forty years. The Fundação Amália Rodrigues (Amália Rodrigues Foundation), created under the artist's will, was established on 10 December 1999 and has its headquarters here.
The house opened to the public in 2001 and retains the atmosphere Amália gave it: a salon with 19th-century azulejos, a suite decorated with contemporary Portuguese art and a kitchen from the 1950s. The collection reflects the artist's eclectic taste, with around 70 dresses, jewellery, paintings, ceramics and many of the objects she called “bugigangas” (knick-knacks).
Visits are always accompanied by a guide. The garden hosts fado concerts and other cultural activities, and the Casa-Museu is part of the Rede Portuguesa de Fundações (Portuguese Foundations Network) and the Rede de Casas e Museus de Músicos Europeus (Network of Houses and Museums of European Musicians).
