About the museum
The Museu João de Deus – Bibliográfico, Pedagógico e Artístico was formally inaugurated on 12 January 1917. After the establishment of the Republic, a group of republicans approached João de Deus Ramos, son of the poet and educator João de Deus, to carry out a project to spread ideals, and Afonso Lopes Vieira publicised in the press the idea of building the museum. It was born with a double purpose: to be a monument to the poet-educator and a library supporting Portuguese culture.
The building is the work of the architect Raul Lino and has decorative paintings by Leal da Câmara. The museum and the neighbouring Jardim-Escola (nursery school) have been Properties of Public Interest since 2012. It functioned as a literary salon, receiving figures such as Afonso Lopes Vieira, Aquilino Ribeiro and David Mourão-Ferreira.
The collection includes correspondence and personal objects of João de Deus and João de Deus Ramos, busts, paintings, drawings and a historic library with methods for initiation into reading and arithmetic, as well as archives of manuscripts, correspondence and a large collection of newspapers and periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries. It belongs to the Associação de Jardins-Escola João de Deus.
