About the museum

The Palácio do Picadeiro in Alpedrinha was built at the end of the 18th century on top of an older house, known as the Casa Quadrada. It was left unfinished when its founder died, owing to financial difficulties, and later had several uses: court, temporary hospital of the Misericórdia and printing workshop of the newspaper “Estrela da Beira”. The name comes from the adjoining courtyard, where horses were trained.

The Fundão municipality restored the building over a long process and, in 2009, opened it to the public as a cultural and museum space, with the Centro de Interpretação das Rotas da Transumância (Interpretation Centre of the Transhumance Routes). The palace has since been classified as a monument of public interest.

Across three floors, the exhibitions and interactive content guide visitors through the history of the village, the Serra da Gardunha, the transhumance routes and shepherding. The traditional cabinetmaking of Alpedrinha is also shown. The space also serves as the visitor centre for Alpedrinha and hosts cultural initiatives, such as the festival Chocalhos – Festival dos Caminhos da Transumância (Cowbells – Festival of the Transhumance Routes).
