About the museum
The Museu do Canteiro (Stonemasonry Museum) opened on 22 January 2005 in Alcains, in the municipality of Castelo Branco. It is housed in the Centro Cultural de Alcains, set up in the Solar dos Goulões, later called Solar Ulisses Pardal. It is a municipal facility.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the work of the stonemason. Its central theme is stone, and the techniques and tools used to work granite, a material closely tied to the social and economic history of the town and the municipality.
Besides the permanent display, the venue has an auditorium and an area for temporary exhibitions held throughout the year. Every year, during the Christmas season, it hosts an exhibition of nativity scenes.
