About the museum
The Museu dos Descobrimentos, also called the Centro de Interpretação “À Descoberta do Novo Mundo” (Interpretation Centre “Discovering the New World”), was born from the wish of the Municipal Council of Belmonte to present one of the greatest achievements in the history of the Portuguese Discoveries: the discovery of Brazil. Belmonte is the home of Pedro Álvares Cabral, and the space sets out to study and publicise his achievement and the history of the largest Portuguese-speaking nation, built over five centuries through the coexistence of cultures.
The visit is designed as a journey of more than 500 years, produced with current museographic technologies and techniques so that it can be understood by all audiences and encourage participation. In 2023 the museum was awarded the Prémio Cinco Estrelas Regiões.
The museum is part of the network of municipal museums of Belmonte, run by the Empresa Municipal de Promoção e Desenvolvimento Social do concelho, and there are combined tickets with the other spaces, such as the Museu Judaico, the Museu do Azeite and the Ecomuseu do Zêzere.
