About the museum
The origins of the Misericórdia da Lourinhã (Lourinhã Misericórdia brotherhood) go back to 15 August 1498. The institution was officially established on 23 July 1586, by royal provision of D. Filipe II de Portugal (Philip II of Portugal), at the request of the Câmara Municipal da Lourinhã. Over the centuries it gathered a heritage of works of art, objects of worship, documents and banners.
The Espaço Museológico da Santa Casa (Santa Casa Museum Space) was opened on 23 July 2024, on Rua da Misericórdia, with the aim of preserving the history of the institution and promoting the link between faith, culture and memory.
The collection includes two canvases attributed to the Mestre da Lourinhã (Master of Lourinhã) and four panels by Lourenço de Salzedo, an artist who also carried out the high altar of the church of the Jerónimos Monastery. The collection also includes a set of Misericórdia banners from the 16th to the 18th centuries, works by local artists, sacred art and a documentary archive.
