About the museum
The Centro de Interpretação da Comunidade Judaica (Centre for the Interpretation of the Jewish Community) opened on 18 May 2017 and is a municipal museum facility of Torres Vedras. Its content was produced under the scientific supervision of the Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste (Alberto Benveniste Chair of Sephardic Studies) of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon.
The centre is in the historic centre, a few metres from the former judiaria (Jewish quarter), and occupies a group of traditionally built buildings known as Cerca da Josefa, rehabilitated under the Rotas de Sefarad (Sepharad Routes) project of the Rede de Judiarias de Portugal (Network of Jewish Quarters of Portugal).
The four exhibition rooms, with texts in Portuguese and English, use panels and documents, such as contracts, letters of pardon and royal letters, to show the everyday life of the community and the fate of Torres Vedras' Jews after the expulsion. The visit is completed with a route through the urban spaces of the former Jewish quarter.
