About the museum
The Museu do Bombarral is housed in the Palácio Gorjão, an early 17th-century building also known as the Palácio dos Coimbras, which later passed to the Gorjão Henriques family. The palace served as a transport garage, a sewing factory and a school until it was bought by the Câmara Municipal in 1940. The north wing housed the library of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and a group of enthusiasts, such as Jorge de Almeida Monteiro, António Maurício, Vasco Cortes and Antero Furtado, who carried out archaeological work in the region and drove the creation of the museum. The museum first opened in 1990, and the building was classified as a property of public interest in 1996.
After requalification works, the museum reopened in June 2025 with new collections and a contemporary, inclusive museography. The permanent exhibition tells stories about origins, through archaeological heritage; the sacred, through religious heritage; forms, in the arts; and words, through literary heritage. There is also a room for temporary exhibitions.
The museum is part of the Rede Museológica do Bombarral (Bombarral Museum Network), which includes the Núcleo Interpretativo da Batalha da Roliça (Interpretation Unit of the Battle of Roliça), the Castro da Columbeira and the Grutas do Vale do Roto (Vale do Roto caves).
