About the museum

The Centro Interpretativo do Salva-vidas de Alvor occupies the building of the former station of the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (Shipwreck Rescue Institute), which operated between 1933 and 1983. The space keeps alive the memory of the station and of the lifeboat “Alvor”, the centrepiece of the exhibition, and portrays the everyday life of the fishing communities of Alvor, from rowing and sailing boats to today's challenges.

The project is by the Municipality of Portimão, carried out by the Museu de Portimão with the Junta de Freguesia de Alvor, and was supported by the CRESC Algarve 2020 programme. The centre opened in December 2023 and is part of the multi-site network of the Museu de Portimão.

The exhibition “O Salva-vidas: O Remar de uma Comunidade” (The Lifeboat: The Rowing of a Community) is told by the community itself, with screens, interactive equipment, objects, documents and donated photographs. The boat can be taken on rails down to the river for the procession in honour of the fishermen. In 2025 the centre received the Silletto Prize for Participation and Community Engagement, awarded within the European Museum of the Year Awards.
