About the museum
The Museu de Lagos was founded in 1930 by José Formosinho and grew through archaeological excavations and donations until it became a multidisciplinary museum. Its collections cover archaeology, sacred art, the history of Lagos, Algarve ethnography, painting, numismatics, mineralogy and overseas ethnography. The museum adopted the name Museu de Lagos in 2021.
The site includes the Igreja de Santo António, church of the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony of the soldiers of the Lagos Infantry Regiment, whose interior is one of the great works of Baroque gilded woodwork in Portugal. The museum is also spread across two buildings: one between the church and the wall of the Cerca Velha, with holdings dating from after 1460 and the special collections, and another in the former PSP police station, which houses the archaeological collection up to 1460.
The route is a journey through the history of Lagos and the Algarve. It includes a cabinet of curiosities with rare pieces, works by artists from the 1915 Congresso Regional Algarvio, palm-leaf, metal, basketry, pottery, embroidery and lace work, handicrafts from the 1940 Exposição Regional do Algarve, and a model of an imaginary village made by Pedro Reis.
