About the museum
The Armazém do Espingardeiro, also known as the Oficina de Selaria or Quartel da Coroa, was part of the group of military structures in Lagos from the mid-17th century. It was built in 1665 by D. António de Almeida, governor of the Kingdom of the Algarve until 1667. The saddlery was housed here and, later, the gunsmith's workshop and storehouse.
It is a corner building in stone masonry, square in plan, with a single storey and a very spacious tesouro roof. The Lagos City Council restored it according to the original layout, and it became the Centro de Interpretação da Evolução Urbana da Cidade de Lagos (Interpretation Centre of the Urban Evolution of the City of Lagos), dedicated to showing the history of the city's growth.
It is one of the units of the Lagos Museum. It is temporarily closed while its contents are being refurbished.
