About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico de Lagos is part of the network of the Museu Nacional Ferroviário, created in the late 1970s on the initiative of Armando Ginestal Machado, who gathered vehicles and objects in former locomotive sheds and railway depots. In Lagos the unit occupies the former station and preserves the locomotive shed, dating from the 1920s, and a turntable.
According to news reports from 2020, the collection included a 1912 carriage of the Caminhos de Ferro do Sul e Sueste, a payroll carriage of 1929, two English steam locomotives of 1889 and 1890, quadricycles and a draisine. In 2007 the space opened to the public only twice a week.
The Município de Lagos and the Fundação Museu Nacional Ferroviário signed a shared-management protocol on 30 July 2022. In August 2025 an addendum was approved to speed up the requalification, which gives the municipality responsibility for running the tenders for the preliminary study and for the architecture, museology and museography projects. The unit is closed, with no reopening date.
