About the museum
The Museu Agrícola e Etnográfico de Vila Viçosa (Agricultural and Ethnographic Museum of Vila Viçosa) opened on 11 January 2015 in the former CP (Comboios de Portugal) station, which served the Vila Viçosa branch line from 1905 to 1990 and was later converted into a cultural space. The building retains azulejo panels from 1940 by the painter Gilberto Renda, with Alentejo themes and scenes from the Restoration of Independence.
The museum brings together agricultural objects and aims to make known rural life, traditional trades and ways of life linked to work in the fields. It pays tribute to those who shaped the rural landscape and developed the potential of the various regions. Among the pieces on display are wooden and iron ploughs, yokes for horses and oxen, harrows of various types, atomisers, sprayers, transfer pumps, motor pumps and hand tools.
The collection is spread over seven rooms and an outdoor area. The museum also has an auditorium with a small library and a room for temporary exhibitions.
