About the museum
The Centro Interpretativo do Boneco de Estremoz (Estremoz Doll Interpretation Centre) opened in August 2021 in the Palácio dos Marqueses da Praia e Monforte, with an investment of €258 thousand, 70% of it funded by Turismo de Portugal. It is dedicated to the Estremoz dolls, hand-modelled figures in fired and painted clay with more than 300 years of history, which UNESCO inscribed in 2017 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The aim is to focus on the present and future of the doll, with an exhibition that is dynamic in both content and presentation. More than 200 dolls made today were acquired from all active certified potters (barristas), and the centre gives prominence to the makers, the protagonists of this centuries-old tradition, valuing the people and not only their production.
The ground floor has a space devoted to the educational side, a long-standing commitment of the Museu Municipal Prof. Joaquim Vermelho, and the permanent exhibition includes an area where visitors can try modelling a figure in the Estremoz manner.
