About the museum

The Museu Berardo Estremoz is a joint initiative of the Coleção Berardo and the Municipality of Estremoz, and presents what is considered the largest and most important private collection of azulejos in Portugal. The collection includes azulejo ensembles in situ, forming part of the heritage of the Quinta and Palácio da Bacalhôa, in Azeitão, and of the Palácio Tocha in Estremoz, as well as more than four thousand five hundred movable examples dating from the 13th to the 21st century.

The museum is housed in the historic Palácio Tocha, which itself has late-Baroque and Rococo azulejo ensembles. The inaugural exhibition, “800 Anos de História do Azulejo”, covers the last eight centuries of azulejo production. It begins with the Islamic origins and the legacy of Al-Andalus, moves through aresta tiles, pattern tiles and Baroque tiles, the cycle of the great masters and the Rococo, and reaches Eclecticism, Art Nouveau and contemporary azulejos. The monumental staircase in Estremoz marble leads to the upper floor.

The route is spread over three floors, with a courtyard dedicated to the Estremoz hydraulic mosaic, and includes a terrace and a garden. The visit is by guided tour and lasts on average one hour and thirty minutes.
