About the museum
The Vista Alegre porcelain factory was founded in 1824 on the banks of the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, close to the raw materials it needed: kaolin, sand and imported coal. Around the factory grew a workers' village, one of the earliest and most emblematic industrial social complexes in the country.
The company began gathering its collection in 1947 and the museum opened to the public in 1964. It was extended and refurbished between 2014 and 2016, and two old kilns were integrated into the reception. The holdings exceed 30,000 pieces, including glassware, experimental tests from 1824 to 1834, porcelain produced since 1835, design drawings, paintings, photographs and factory equipment.
The visit traces the development of Portuguese porcelain manufacture, from the first glassware and the pieces of the late monarchy to commemorative pieces and decorations of almost two centuries. The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, a national monument since 1910, can also be visited, and on weekdays the hand-painting workshop. The museum received an honourable mention as Best Portuguese Museum in 2017.
