About the museum
The Casa Gafanhoa, built at the end of the 1920s, is a former farmers' dwelling. It was restored and converted into a municipal museum on 11 November 2000 and is run by the Grupo Etnográfico da Gafanha da Nazaré.
The building reflects the life of a well-off farmer of the region. The furnishings are dominated by furniture and utensils from the early 20th century and show a simple but practical way of living, which bears witness to the first inhabitants of the Gafanha.
Inside is a strong testimony to the rural ways of life of the municipality of Ílhavo, closely linked to the daily work at sea and on the lagoon that shape its culture, ethnography and traditions.
