About the museum

The Museu Arte Nova (Art Nouveau Museum) occupies the former residence of the family of Mário Belmonte Pessoa, built between 1907 and 1909 and classified as a Property of Public Interest. The design is attributed to Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, possibly with the collaboration of Ernesto Korrodi. The façade, with abundant decoration and organic lines that combine stone, iron, azulejo, wood and glass, is one of the most striking examples of Art Nouveau in Aveiro.

The museum opened in 2012 as a unit of the Museu da Cidade (Aveiro City Museum). Aveiro is known in Portugal as the City of Art Nouveau, as the movement reached its greatest expression here between 1904 and 1920. The museum is part of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network and of the Council of Europe's Art Nouveau cultural itinerary.

The permanent exhibition is on the upper floor and explains the socio-economic and cultural context of Art Nouveau and its inspiration from nature, with a pianola, images of international and Portuguese artists, a short film, a replica of the Delphos dress by Mariano Fortuny and a contemporary design unit linked to biodesign. The top floor hosts temporary exhibitions. On the way out is the Casa de Chá (Tea House), with a courtyard paved with original cobblestones.
