About the museum

The museum belongs to the Fundação Dionísio Pinheiro e Alice Cardoso Pinheiro (Dionísio Pinheiro and Alice Cardoso Pinheiro Foundation), established by the will of the businessman Dionísio Pinheiro (Águeda, 1891 – Porto, 1968) and created on 5 May 1969, based in Águeda, to keep and promote his art collection. Of humble origins, Dionísio Pinheiro moved to Porto at the age of 11, became a partner in the Armazéns Cunha and founded a textile factory in Rebordões, in Santo Tirso. His wife, Alice Cardoso Pinheiro (1900–1974), helped him choose and acquire the pieces.

The building was constructed on the Quinta de São Pedro (São Pedro estate), the couple's property, to a design by the architect Agostinho Ricca, between 1974 and 1982. The museum opened on 28 June 1985 and has six permanent exhibition rooms and one temporary exhibition room, as well as a library, an auditorium, gardens and woodland.

The collection brings together objects that were part of the couple's daily life in their homes in Porto and Águeda: sculptures by Mestre Pêro, Portuguese and European painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries, furniture from the reigns of D. João V, D. José and D. Maria I, silverware, watercolours, drawings, ceramics, glass, archaeology and a sacred art room.
