About the museum
The Museu da Cidade de Aveiro (Aveiro City Museum) was created in 2008 and has been part of the Portuguese Museum Network since 2015. It is a multi-site museum, which also includes the Museu Arte Nova (Art Nouveau Museum) and the Ecomuseu Marinha da Troncalhada (Troncalhada Marsh Ecomuseum), and it is linked to networks such as the European Route of Ceramics and the International Academy of Ceramics.
It operates in two adjoining buildings on Rua João Mendonça, next to the Canal Central (Central Canal). One has an Art Nouveau façade, dating from around 1910, and is also part of the Museu Arte Nova route. The other shows, on its upper floors, yellow and blue azulejos on a white background, with raised floral motifs, an example of ceramics applied to the city's architecture.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of Aveiro from its prehistoric origins to the 21st century, around four themes: the territory shaped by the Ria (lagoon) and its resources (moliço, seaweed gathered as fertiliser, fishing, pottery and salt), the evolution from village to city, the people who built it, and the elements of local identity, such as the moliceiro boat, the gabão (traditional fishermen's cloak), ovos-moles (sweet egg-yolk confections) and devotion to Santa Joana. The route begins in an immersive room with a panoramic view of Aveiro.
