About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico de Macinhata do Vouga, in the municipality of Águeda, occupies the former carriage shed of Macinhata do Vouga station on the Linha do Vouga, the only narrow-gauge line still in operation in Portugal.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of the link that, until 1990, connected Viseu and Espinho, including the Aveiro branch line. Several vehicles, designed and built in Portugal between 1940 and 1947 at the Oficinas de Sernada do Vouga, feature in the display and evoke the history and memory of the Vouga Valley and its community.
The highlights include the national railcars ME 51 and ME 53, known as “Auto Rail”, built on Panhard lorry chassis. The collection also includes an inspection rail trolley (dresina), a steam locomotive, a goods van, a third-class carriage and a narrow-gauge postal ambulance coach. The unit is part of the National Network of Railway Museums of the Fundação Museu Nacional Ferroviário.
