About the museum

The Galeria Municipal de Montemor-o-Novo opened in 1989 and, since 1991, has been on the ground floor of the Convento de São João de Deus, in the centre of the town.

The space has three rooms, which can be lit by natural or artificial light, and sometimes uses the inner cloister of the convent. Its programme brings together contemporary art, painting, sculpture, photography, video and ceramics, and gives visibility to resident artists and to projects developed in the municipality.

The building is shared with the Biblioteca Municipal and the children's and young people's area, and the gallery also plays a role in arts education and cultural outreach.
