About the museum
The Coleção de Carruagens occupies a former granary of the Chapter of Évora Cathedral, acquired in 1959 by Vasco Maria Eugénio de Almeida to incorporate it into the building complex of the Páteo de São Miguel. Open to the public since 1998 and refurbished between 2011 and 2012, it brings together the carriages and travelling vehicles used by the Casa Eugénio de Almeida between the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
The carriages were bought from the main European manufacturers and arrived in Lisbon by sailing ship or steamboat, ready to use or to be assembled at their destination. The luxurious finishes, the imported horses, the harnesses and the figure of the coachman were, in the nineteenth-century city, a clear statement of social status. The Eugénio de Almeida family moved in this world in Lisbon, and the carriages, linked to the “viagens sociais” (social journeys), were one more expression of it.
With the arrival of the motor car in 1907, the carriages were sent by train to the family's estates in Évora. During the Second World War, fuel rationing meant that they returned to the streets for a time. After the war they were never neglected, and their conservation and restoration today allow the collection to be appreciated. It is part of the Évora Museums Network (Rede de Museus de Évora).
