About the museum

The Palácio dos Duques de Cadaval in Évora was built by Martim Afonso de Melo on the ruins of a Moorish castle and was originally called the Palácio da Torre das Cinco Quinas. It combines Mudéjar, Gothic and Manueline styles and temporarily hosted the kings D. João II, D. João IV and D. João V. It is still the residence of the ducal family today.

The title of Duke of Cadaval was created by D. João IV on 26 April 1648, in favour of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo. The present duchess is D. Diana Álvares Pereira de Melo.

The visit includes the Church of São João Evangelista, also known as the Igreja dos Lóios, founded in 1485, with a Gothic portal, azulejo panels by António de Oliveira dated 1711, family tombs, an Arab cistern and a Renaissance tomb of the 16th century attributed to Nicolau Chanterene. Some rooms of the palace are open to the public all year round and show a family collection of books, charters, arms, paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelain, portraits and travel accessories.
