About the museum
The Lagar de Varas do Cabeço das Pesqueiras lies north-east of the Cabeço das Pesqueiras district, on the left bank of the Enxarrique stream, near the Tagus river. It belonged to the Pinto Cardoso family and had such unusual features that the municipality acquired it in 2007 and proposed its classification as a Property of Municipal Interest. It was redeveloped in 2011 so that it could be visited as a museum unit.
The building is made of masonry typical of the region, in schist and quartzite, and documents all the historical stages of olive oil production, from human and animal power to hydraulic and mechanical systems. It is considered the most complete example in the municipality, as it combines several production systems.
On the upper floor is the exhibition “O Azeite: Oiro de Ródão”, which places the press in a territorial perspective: from the olive groves and the stages of olive production to the traditional and cutting-edge presses that still operate in the municipality. In Sarnadas de Ródão, the Núcleo Museológico do Azeite (Olive Oil Museum Unit) complements the visit with a 20th-century press.
