About the museum

The Museu dos Têxteis MUTEX occupies the premises of the former Empresa de Cardação e Fiação da Corga, Lda. (Corga Wool Carding and Spinning Company Ltd.), in Cebolais de Cima, in the municipality of Castelo Branco. The wool carding and spinning factory was founded in 1939 and rebuilt in the 1950s after a fire. The building now belongs to the municipality.

The museum opened in July 2017 and presents the industrial and technical heritage of the textile sector, paying tribute to the people who developed this industry in Cebolais de Cima and in Retaxo. In one of the buildings there are films, models and exhibition modules, as well as samples and weaving mechanisms that visitors can try out. In the other, the original carding and spinning machinery is preserved, together with a wooden hand loom and large weaving machines.

The route also includes a memory space dedicated to workers and entrepreneurs, a hand-weaving workshop and the company archive of the former factory. The museum has a shop selling textile products and crafts, and a café.
