About the museum
The Museu do Bordado e do Barro de Nisa was conceived to defend and promote the local heritage, in particular the pedrada pottery and the typical embroidery of Nisa. Its mission is to conserve, research and disseminate the physical and human heritage of these traditional crafts and to place them within the history of the municipality. It also presents itself as a space for learning and for the exchange of experiences, in connection with craftspeople and researchers.
The museum is polynuclear and spread across the historic centre of the town. The Núcleo Central (central unit), in the Cadeia Nova building, houses the permanent exhibition on clay and embroidery, with the most valuable historical and artistic pieces in the collection, interactive multimedia applications, rooms for temporary exhibitions and the administrative services. The Núcleo do Bordado (embroidery unit), in operation since 2004 in a traditional Nisa house, presents a small collection of embroideries in a setting that recreates a typical bedroom, a traditional kitchen and farm work tools.
The project also foresees, in buildings adjoining the Cadeia Velha, a documentation centre and educational services, a reserves and restoration centre, and a clay unit with a traditional workshop.
