About the museum
The Museu Cargaleiro results from an agreement between the Fundação Manuel Cargaleiro and the Municipality of Castelo Branco, which made it possible to house the work and collection of the painter and ceramicist Manuel Cargaleiro, born in Vila Velha de Ródão. It opened to the public on 9 September 2005 in the Solar dos Cavaleiros, an 18th-century mansion, with the exhibition “Cargaleiro – 60 anos a celebrar a cor”.
On 10 June 2011 a contemporary building was inaugurated, built on the site of the former Judiaria (Jewish quarter) and adjoining the mansion, where the exhibition “Cargaleiro – Vida e Obra” is presented, complemented by the Cerâmica Ratinha and Cerâmica Contemporânea sections. The museum is in the historic area of Castelo Branco, next to the Praça Camões, also called Praça Velha.
The foundation's collection brings together works by the artist himself and those he acquired as a collector, in a vision that crosses periods, styles and cultures. The museum also has a library, an educational service, a shop and a small open-air amphitheatre, and organises temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
