About the museum

The Lisboa Story Centre – Memórias da Cidade opened on 11 September 2012 in the east wing of the Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon. It is a space devoted to the history of the Portuguese capital, designed as an illustrated book that takes visitors on a journey through time.

The route, covering about 2,200 square metres and lasting approximately 60 minutes, uses sets, multimedia, simulators and sensory experiences. The exhibition is divided into six areas and 17 chapters, ranging from the origin myths and the city walls to the cosmopolitan Lisbon of the Discoveries, the earthquake of 1 November 1755, the reconstruction envisaged by the Marquis of Pombal and the Praça do Comércio. On the upper floor, the space “Lisboa Virtual” brings together a database on episodes from the city’s history, which can be consulted on touchscreens.

The visit is made with an automatic audio guide, available in nine languages, including a children’s version in Portuguese.
