About the museum
The Madeira Story Centre opened to the public in 2005 as a historical interpretation centre in the Zona Velha (Old Town) of Funchal. The route tells the history and culture of the island of Madeira, from its volcanic origins to the present day, in a chronological and interactive way.
The exhibition appeals to the five senses, with interactive panels, scent boxes, sounds, images and games, and covers themes such as flora, the legends of the discovery, the discovery of Madeira, trade and corsairs, the island as a strategic point, the development of the archipelago and the period after the great navigations. The visit takes about 45 minutes.
Later, an area was added in the Almirante Reis garden, next to the Funchal Cable Car, where two former port landing craft, the “Mosquito” and the “Áquila”, are on display. The building also includes a craft shop and a panoramic restaurant on the terrace.
