About the museum
The Museu Henrique e Francisco Franco opened on 21 August 1987 and brings together works by the brothers Henrique and Francisco Franco acquired by the Funchal Municipal Council. The collection also includes artistic and personal objects of both artists.
The museum's mission is to research, acquire, document, conserve, interpret and publicise the artistic heritage in its care. Since 1998 it has also focused on temporary exhibitions and, in 2018, it began to include the Chapel of Boa Viagem as a hub for contemporary art and culture, with its own exhibition programme.
Since 2023 the museum has been part of the Rede Portuguesa de Arte Contemporânea (Portuguese Contemporary Art Network), a structure that brings together the creation and production of contemporary Portuguese art and supports artists and creators. Visits can be accompanied by audio guides and by guided tours with advance booking.
