About the museum
The Museu do Brinquedo da Madeira was created in 2003 from the toy collection of the architect José Manuel Borges Pereira, brought together with pieces from other collectors. It operates in the Armazém do Mercado (Market Warehouse), a traditional 18th-century Madeiran house, restored in a way that preserves its original layout.
The collection numbers some 20,000 toys from Portugal, England, Germany, France and other countries, dating from the late 19th century to the present. The route is spread over seven themed rooms.
Among the pieces are lead soldiers, steam boats, aeroplanes, wooden games, dolls, car and motorcycle miniatures and film characters. The museum runs playful activities through the Mini Clube AM, with school visits, birthday parties and themed parties.
