About the museum

The Núcleo Museológico do IVBAM (IVBAM Museum Unit) was created to honour the Bordado Madeira (Madeira embroidery), which played a decisive role in the island's economy, culture and social life from the second half of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century. It is housed in the headquarters of the Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira (Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts Institute), on Rua Visconde de Anadia.

The collection brings together Madeira embroidery pieces more than 150 years old, produced between the 1860s and the 1930s. In the main hall a Romantic setting from the 18th and 19th centuries has been recreated, with furniture and other decorative arts, along with garments with applications or entirely made in Madeira embroidery, displayed on mannequins and in display cases.

In a second room the same atmosphere is kept, with decorative and utilitarian arts, pieces linked to the embroidery production process, and a recreated alcove where underwear, bed linen, towels and other accessories can be seen.
