About the museum
The Museu da Ruralidade, officially called the Núcleo da Oralidade (Oral Tradition Unit), opened on 29 July 2011 in the village of Entradas, in the municipality of Castro Verde. It occupies the former farmhouse known as the Casa da Leda, on Rua de Santa Madalena, of about 500 m². The opening was part of the redevelopment of Entradas' historic centre.
The museum presents the ethnological heritage of the Campo Branco, the area of Alentejo between the Algarve hills and the Beja clay plains. It has three spaces: the first shows farm implements and tools of Campaniça agriculture and hosts temporary exhibitions; the second presents a blacksmith's workshop, the collection of the last abegão (ploughman) of Castro Verde and miniature farm implements; the third, the Núcleo da Oralidade, brings together documentation on intangible heritage, with emphasis on the Feira de Castro and the viola campaniça (traditional string instrument).
The Museu da Ruralidade is linked to other museum units in the municipality: the Polo da Tecelagem (weaving centre) in Lombador, the unit “A Minha Escola” in Almeirim, and the unit “Aivados, Aldeia Comunitária”.
