About the museum
In Portugal, the first historical reference to windmills dates from the 14th century. With newer technologies they were gradually forgotten and abandoned, but some were restored for housing or as tourist attractions, and some can still be seen working as they used to.
Around the town of Aljustrel there were about 17 windmills, most of which are now abandoned or destroyed. The Moinho do Maralhas is one of the exceptions: it stands on a rise south of the centre of the town, from which there is a panoramic view of Aljustrel, and it is in good condition thanks to a recent restoration.
The mill is the core of the Moinho de Vento (Windmill) of the Museu Municipal de Aljustrel, which presents it as evidence of past grinding processes and its characteristic architecture. Visits are guided by the museum and require prior booking.
