About the museum
Aljustrel has a remarkable archaeological heritage, recognised in Portugal and abroad, the result of about a century of research at various sites in the municipality. For this reason, the Câmara Municipal opened the headquarters branch of the Museu Municipal de Aljustrel in May 2002, dedicated to the archaeology and history of the municipality.
The museum holds much of the archaeological and ethnographic material collected in the region and invites visitors to travel through time, through objects used by the peoples who settled here, from the most remote periods to the present day. It also aims to be a space for research and learning in the service of the community, in partnership with other educational bodies and museums.
In addition to the headquarters branch, the museum includes the rural branches of Ervidel and Aljustrel, the Central de Compressores branch, the Windmill branch and the Tipógrafo (Printer) branch. It is part of the Portuguese Museum Network and the Network of Museums of the District of Beja, and it has an education service with guided tours, games and workshops, and a shop.
