About the museum
The Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa (Lisbon Geographical Society) was founded in 1875 and occupies a building in Lisbon's Baixa district, on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão. The museum is part of the society and inherited the collection of the former Museu Colonial (Colonial Museum), so its main focus is ethnography.
The collection brings together ceramics, sculpture, furniture, painting, textiles, glass and azulejos from Angola, Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, Timor and Macau. There are also scientific and navigational instruments, maps and travel diaries of explorers such as Roberto Ivens, Silva Porto and Gago Coutinho, displayed in several rooms of the building.
