About the museum
The Museu da GNR (GNR Museum) opened in 2014 in the Quartel do Carmo (Carmo Barracks), next to the Largo do Carmo in Lisbon, and belongs to the History and Culture Division of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard). This division safeguards and promotes the archival, bibliographic and museum heritage from barracks across the country.
The circuit, covering about 450 m², is organised around three themes: the figure of Nuno Álvares Pereira, the history of the GNR, and 25 April 1974, the day the barracks was the scene of the outcome of the revolution. The collection covers more than six centuries and includes uniforms, weapons, flags, decorations, ceramics, azulejos, vehicles, and musical and clockmaking instruments, as well as objects from the Guarda Real (Royal Guard), the Guarda Municipal (Municipal Guard) and the Guarda Fiscal (customs and excise police), which was merged into the GNR in 1993.
The museum also presents re-creations of a First World War trench and of a tungsten mine, material on censorship and the dictatorship, and items linked to 25 April, such as the uniform of Captain Salgueiro Maia and the chair of Marcelo Caetano. Among the highlights is the chest given by Queen Elizabeth II to the GNR in 1957.
