About the museum
The Museu de Arte e da Atrelagem de Gavião (MAAG) opened on 25 April 2025 and is dedicated to carriages and harness of the 19th and 20th centuries and to movable cultural and family heritage. It occupies a late 19th-century manor building, which was the residence of the Pequito Rebelo family and later a minor seminary, on the central square of the town, opposite the Paços do Concelho (town hall). The municipality acquired and rehabilitated it to a design by the architect Carrilho da Graça.
The museum extends over four floors. The first two show carriages and other horse-drawn vehicles (hipomóveis), exhibited in partnership with the Museu Nacional dos Coches (National Coach Museum); the remaining floors house an art collection, which includes harness accessories and objects belonging to elite families. The inaugural exhibition is titled “Tradição e distinção – Hipomóveis e tesouros de família” (Tradition and Distinction – Horse-Drawn Vehicles and Family Treasures).
The route also includes an interactive and educational area that explains the parts, types and names of harness equipment and carriages. The museum also displays a collection of harnesses from the Dorantes family, of Spain.
