About the museum
The Kadoorie Synagogue – Mekor Haim (“Source of Life”) is the seat of the Jewish Community of Porto and the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula. Construction began in 1929 on the initiative of Captain Artur Barros Basto, and the building was inaugurated in 1938. The name Kadoorie commemorates the family of the philanthropist Sir Elly Kadoorie, who supported much of the work in honour of his mother, a descendant of Portuguese Jews.
The community holds regular religious services, a mikveh and kosher food at the synagogue, and runs cultural and educational activities. The Porto Jewish Museum presents four millennia of Jewish history in the world and about two millennia in the territory of present-day Portugal, with objects, documents and films on subjects such as the Edict of D. Manuel, the Inquisition and the return of the community in the 19th to 21st centuries.
The museum also includes rooms on the community's film awards, modern anti-Semitism and Operation Yonatan, a room with kosher port wine, a cinema and a plaque with the names of about a thousand people from Porto persecuted for Judaising.
