Museu Judaico do Porto

About the museum

The Museu Judaico do Porto is run by the Porto Jewish Community and presents four millennia of Jewish history in the world and about two millennia in the territory that is now Portugal. Objects, documents and films show both the darker chapters, such as the edict of King Manuel I and the Inquisition, and the role of Jews in the founding and development of the country, as well as the return of the community in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

Besides the rooms depicting the community's secular history, the museum includes a room with the community's film awards, a room on modern antisemitism, a room dedicated to Operação Jonatã (the Entebbe rescue), a cellar room with kosher port wine, a cinema, and a plaque bearing the names of almost a thousand people from Porto who were persecuted for Judaising heresy.

The museum is on Rua de Guerra Junqueiro, where the community has its headquarters. Together with the Museu do Holocausto do Porto, it receives more than 50,000 students from Portuguese schools every year.
