About the museum
The idea of creating a neo-realism museum emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, from a group of intellectuals connected to the movement, who set up a set-up committee on 18 May 1988. With the support of the Vila Franca de Xira Municipal Council and the Associação Promotora do Museu do Neo-Realismo (Association for the Promotion of the Neo-Realism Museum), the museum was installed in 1990 in a private property in the centre of the town. It remained there for 17 years and, from 1993, the permanent exhibition “Entre a Realidade e a Utopia – O Movimento Neo-Realista” was on view.
In 2003 the Council approved the design by the architect Alcino Soutinho for a purpose-built building on Rua Alves Redol, which opened on 20 October 2007. The building has several floors, rooms for long-term and temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, storerooms, a specialised library, a bookshop and a café. The museum holds important literary, publishing and artistic estates, documentary archives, works of art, periodicals and a library on the movement.
Today the museum seeks to go beyond its original theme and relate neo-realism to other literary, artistic and intellectual currents of the 20th and 21st centuries. It carries out research, exhibitions, cultural mediation programmes and educational activities. Admission is free.
