About the museum

The EVOA – Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves (EVOA – Bird Watching and Visitor Space) is located in the Lezíria Sul (southern floodplain), on the left bank of the Tagus estuary, next to Vila Franca de Xira. It belongs to the Companhia das Lezírias and is a space licensed as nature tourism, dedicated to observing and interpreting the wildlife of the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve. The centre celebrates more than a decade of activity.

The site covers about 70 hectares of wetland, with three lagoons, walking trails, observation points and photography hides. The presence of birds depends greatly on the tides, and high tide is the most favourable time for observation. Visits can be made on foot or, on some routes, in an electric car.

The interpretation centre has a permanent exhibition titled “EVOA, onde o mundo encontra o Tejo” (EVOA, where the world meets the Tagus), exhibition rooms, an auditorium and a café with a view of the birds. The immersive exhibition “EVOA nas Asas do Tejo” (EVOA on the Wings of the Tagus) offers visitors a flight over the estuary from the birds' point of view, across some 20 interactive modules, with projections, estuary sounds and choices in which the visitor takes on the role of a bird.

Admission & discounts

The centre does not publish a single admission price; the daily guided visit and the immersive exhibition have their own prices. Residents of Vila Franca de Xira and Benavente and members of partner organisations, with proof and only with advance booking, pay €14 (adult), €11 (senior), €8 (child) and €34 (family package) for the guided visit.

Getting there & parking

The entrance is through the Portão do Cardal (Cardal Gate), next to the Ponte Marechal Carmona (Marshal Carmona Bridge). On request, transport can be arranged from the Vila Franca de Xira or Benavente train stations.
