About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico Agrícola (Agricultural Museum Unit) is housed in the former Matadouro Municipal (municipal slaughterhouse) of Benavente, a building from the late 19th century whose facades, with decorated gables, give no hint of its original function. It opened on 25 March 2000 and extended the Municipal Museum into a structure with more than one site, while preserving the building as a memory of the municipality's industrial heritage.
The long-term exhibition, “O Calendário Agrícola” (The Agricultural Calendar), takes visitors through the traditional agricultural calendar, based on the indications of the Borda d'Água almanac, and through the various stages of production, illustrated with objects from the Municipal Museum's collection.
The unit also houses two spaces for artistic activities for the community: the Espaço Arriscart, aimed at school groups, families and the general public, and the Espaço Gravurar, a printmaking workshop space. Since the main museum building has been closed for works, visits and activities have taken place in this unit.
