About the museum
The Museu dos Cristos de Sousel is housed in the Largo do Convento, in the town of Sousel, and opened on 24 April 2019. Its collection consists of 1,486 images of Christ, of very varied types, origins and periods, which the municipality acquired in February 1990. It is a broad sample of devotional imagery, very present in Portugal, mainly of national origin, but also with examples from Africa, the Indo-Portuguese world, the Holy Land and various European countries.
The permanent exhibition occupies the lower and upper floors and is divided into six thematic sections, with interactive multimedia components. After an introduction to the history of the collection and the museum, sections follow dedicated to African sculpture, Holy Land sculpture, Indo-Portuguese sculpture, and learned Baroque and late Baroque sculpture, Portuguese and European. On the upper floor are popular sculpture and the metalwork section, with processional crosses and other pieces.
The museum also has a room for temporary exhibitions, an education service room and visitable reserves, where the rest of the collection can be seen.
